September 14 - The Offshore & Heavy Lift Centre at the Broekman breakbulk terminal on the Waalhaven in Rotterdam became operational today, September 14, 2015.
In addition to a massive renovation, the centre on the former Rotterdam Drydock Company (RDM) site has been expanded to cover 16,000 sq m.
Broekman now has at its disposal four modernised high halls equipped with overhead travelling cranes with hoisting capacities of between 75 and 700 tonnes.
In addition to the centre's storage facilities, it is possible to assemble, modify and pack all types of heavy and complex cargo in the four halls, said Broekman. The centre also boasts a 300 m long and 10.5 m deep quay, which can handle cargo of up to 1,800 tonnes per loading unit.
"The energy and offshore industry is increasingly demanding space for assembly right on the water," said Broekman Logistics ceo Raymond Riemen. "This avoids having to transfer cargo again for shipment to the factory, which saves costs."
Emile Hoogsteden, director of containers, breakbulk and logistics at the Port of Rotterdam Authority added that the new Broekman centre has the potential to significantly boost the possibilities for heavy lift and project cargo handling at the Dutch gateway.
