July 23 - Five of Smit Lamnalco's tugs have played a key role in the unberthing and float-over of the world's largest high-voltage direct current (HVDC) platform, DolWin Beta, at Drydocks World in Dubai.

The five tugs, with a combined bollard pull power of more than 450 tonnes, provided marine support during both the unberthing process and the 38.6 km tow offshore, as well as the platform's float-over onto Dockwise's heavy transport vessel, Mighty Servant 1.

The 29,000-tonne semi?submersible heavy transport vessel was deployed to ship the DolWin beta structure to Haugesund in Norway, where the platform will be commissioned prior to deployment in the German North Sea.

With a capacity of more than 900 MW, the platform will host power conversion equipment for three offshore wind farms.

"Our tugs and crews delivered the vital role in the safe and efficient un?berthing and transfer of the DolWin beta, whilst the Mighty Servant 1 waited offshore before the float on and transit to Europe," said Ian Hugo, the company's regional managing director for the Middle East and Indian Subcontinent.

The 15,000-tonne DolWin beta platform is 100 m long, 70 m wide and over 90 m high.
