ArcelorMittal chooses PKP for super-long lines

March 11 - Poland headquartered rail freight specialist PKP Cargo Logistics has started handling 120 m long steel railway lines on behalf of ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steel producer.

ArcelorMittal Poland steel works in D?browa Górnicza started manufacturing the super-long rails at the end of February 2014, and PKP handled the first rails using its own fleet of dedicated railcars at the start of March.

"Transporting a long rail is a challenge which requires a lot of experience and proper preparation on the part of the carrier. The fact that PKP Cargo was chosen by such a partner as ArcelorMittal confirms that we are one of the few carriers who have both: well prepared rolling stock and highly qualified workers," said Jacek Neska, managing sales director of PKP Cargo.

At the beginning of February, PKP Cargo completed a trial run using railcars equipped with frames dedicated to transporting the 120-m rails. The height of the frame enables loading in two layers. In the future, cars will be equipped with higher frames that will allow for three-tier loading.

"Production of long rails is a project of high strategic priority for us, especially in the context of plans connected with railway investments in many countries, including Poland," said Manfred Van Vlierberghe, general director of ArcelorMittal Poland. "We want to participate in them as a supplier of rails for both domestic and international markets."
