Blue Marlin arrives in Australia with huge LHD load

October 19 - The 217 m Dockwise heavy lift vessel Blue Marlin has completed the delivery from Spain of the new (Landing Helicopter Dock) LHD Canberra for the Royal Australian Navy into Port Phillip in southern Victoria, Australia.

The vessel was constructed at the Navantia Ferrol shipyard in Galicia, Spain (HLPFI News August 8, 2012), before being loaded ono the semi-submersible Blue Marlin for the 12,000 nautical mile voyage around the Cape of Good Hope to Australia.

The Canberra class LHD vessels are 230.8 m long overall, with a maximum beam of 32 m and a maximum draught of 7.18 m.

Building of the ship, one of the largest ever completed for the Royal Australian Navy, will be completed at BAE Williamstown in the coming months.

The spectacular load attracted the attention of the media, and crowds gathered at suitable onshore vantage points during the voyage to watch its progress.
