Cargo for the Congo

September 30 - Express Global Logistics (EXG) has worked together with Belgian forwarder Polytra in the delivery of 3,500 freight tonnes of cargo for a large hydropower project in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The cargo, which comprised of material handling equipment, such as excavators, dumpers and cranes, was shipped from Mumbai to the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam, before being transported onwards to Lubumbashi.

The companies involved explained that the project had several challenges with regards to the shipping documents, Customs clearance with least amount of demurrage at the discharge port, and organising onward transport for the entire consignment, which require approximately 80 vehicles.

Permits also had to be obtained from various authorities due to the fact that the cargo was moving through three international borders (Tanzania, Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo).

EXG and Polytra had to work together to ensure that the large pieces of over-dimensional cargo were re-routed under the authorisation and supervision of the client, in order to enable a safe journey to the final destination.

Both companies also managed to maximise the loads, without compromising on the safety of the cargo, which subsequently reduced the number of trailers required.

Express Global Logistics and Polytra are both members of the Worldwide Project Consortium (WWPC) in India and Belgium, respectively.
