Crown Estate approves extension projects

Seven UK offshore wind energy extension projects, with a combined output of 2.8 GW, will progress to the award of seabed rights, the Crown Estate has said.

Applications were cleared for up to 317 MW of capacity at Sheringham Shoal, along with 402 MW at Dudgeon, 504 MW at Greater Gabbard, 353 MW at Galloper and 300 MW at Thanet.

Off the northwest coastline, approval was given for 576 MW at Gwynt y Mor. An extension to the 400 MW Rampion project can proceed, but Ørsted's application to extend the 504 MW Race Bank off Lincolnshire was declined.

Will Apps, head of energy development at the Crown Estate, said: “Project extensions offer an efficient opportunity to unlock almost a 10 percent increase in the UK offshore wind portfolio, supporting the continued growth of the development pipeline and demonstrating continued strong market appetite for new projects in UK waters.

“In today’s increasingly busy sea-space, a collaborative approach will become all the more crucial, ensuring that the continued ambitious growth of offshore wind happens in balance with the wide range of other interests offshore. We’ll continue to work closely with customers, stakeholders and government to address spatial challenges, in support of responsible, future deployment of UK offshore wind."
