Cuxport ideal for airframe delivery

Bohnet has coordinated the delivery of a 95-tonne aircraft frame from Ravensburg to the Cuxport terminal in Germany.

The frame was trucked to the inland waterway port at Plochingen and barged to the port of Cuxhaven. Terminal operator, Cuxport, completed the transhipment from the barge onto a ten-axle low loader with a four-axle tractor unit at its multipurpose facility.

The loaded truck/trailer combination, which weighed 150 tonnes, was driven on board LD Seaplane’s ro-ro vessel, Ville de Bordeaux, and delivered to Saint-Nazaire, France, two days later.

Using the inland waterway network via Cuxhaven was preferred because stringent road regulations and time-consuming permitting procedures would have made long-distance road haulage impractical, according to Roland Schneider, head of business development at Cuxport.

“When handling heavy shipments of this size, it is often necessary to find alternatives to just moving them by road – whether this is because of the dimensions of the consignment, the road conditions or the savings in time,” he added.
