Hallett handles Heathrow cargoes

Hallett Silbermann has delivered two Liebherr HS 8130 HD crawler cranes, each weighing 85 tonnes, to London Heathrow Airport as part of the airport's integrated baggage system construction project.

The project will construct 2.1 km of tunnels under the airport to transfer passenger bags between terminals for connecting flights.

To transport the equipment, Hallett Silbermann provided a Highways Agency-compliant escort vehicle from its fleet to accompany the loads throughout their two-day journey.

Arrival at Heathrow was carefully coordinated and the vehicles were subject to the same security regulations as passengers, being searched for hazardous materials and restricted substances before airside access was granted.

In addition to the two crawler cranes, Hallett Silbermann also delivered numerous loads of ancillary equipment, including a smaller 80-ton (72.5-tonne) crane, 16 m long silos and 18 m long cages, as well as digger buckets.

Adam Whybrow of Hallett Silbermann said: “These were very large and demanding loads, requiring meticulous planning of routes, permit applications for the numerous highway and council areas, and police authorities.”
