Nautical Institute addresses piracy, terrorism in November

October 27 - Increasing acts of terrorism and piracy and their impact on the safety of crews and vessels are to be debated at the Nautical Institute's Terrorism, Piracy and War Risks seminar in Southampton November 6-7.

According to a statement from the Nautical Institute, an international professional body for qualified seafarers and others with an interest in nautical matters: "This is not another seminar on piracy in the Horn of Africa region. This is the fourth in the series of Nautical Institute London and Solent branches Maritime Excellence seminars."

It said this seminar will look at the worldwide implications of terrorism, piracy and areas of conflict in which a vessel could be detained. It will discuss what the industry can offer as practical guidance to the mariner and shipowners on how to manage the risks posed by maritime crime, to keep the mariner safe and allow them to operate within the law.

The seminar will hear the views of a sea-going mariner on his experience of avoiding pirates. Guest speakers will also focus on subjects that include the psychology of terrorism, practical precautions recommended to mariners, the roles played by underwriters, P&I and War Risk Clubs, legal implications, naval protection and how negotiations for release of vessel and crew are conducted.
