New cranes at Port of Savannah

November 28 - The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has introduced four new neo-Panamax cranes to the Port of Savannah.

The 412 ft (125.5 m) tall ship-to-shore cranes, each with a 72-ton (65.3-tonne) lift capacity and 192 ft (58.5 m) boom, sailed into the port last week on board the Dockwise semi-submersible vessel, Swan, bringing the port's total fleet of to 30, once commissioned.

A further six neo-Panamax cranes are expected to be commissioned by 2020.

The port's chief operating officer, Ed McCarthy, said the new arrivals - which represent a 15 percent increase in Savannah's crane fleet - would ensure the port is prepared for the next wave of growth for Georgia. He added that some two thirds of ships currently entering the port are neo-Panamax vessels.

In addition to the growing crane fleet, expansion of the port's infrastructure includes the Mason Mega Rail Terminal, set to double its annual rail capacity to one million container lifts.
