Heavy Lift Across the World

Record lift at Vogtle

August 11 - The 1,035-tonne CA01 module has been installed in the Unit 3 nuclear island as part of the Plant Vogtle expansion project in Georgia, USA.

Measuring 21.3 m high by 24.4 m wide, the CA01 module was assembled on site in the modular assembly building, before being moved to the nuclear island in one piece and lifted into place by a 170.6 m tall heavy lift derrick.

The CA01 module, which is the heaviest component to have been lifted at the site so far, will house two steam generators for Unit 3 in addition to other equipment. The second of the steam generators arrived at the plant from South Korea in June 2015.

Once units 3 and 4 join the existing two Vogtle units already in operation, Plant Vogtle is expected to generate more electricity than any US nuclear facility, said Georgia Power.

Southern Nuclear, a subsidiary of Southern Company, is overseeing construction and will operate the two new 1,100 MW AP1000 units for Georgia Power and co-owners Oglethorpe Power Corporation, the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and Dalton Utilities
