The Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) has visited Ontario and Quebec, as part of a continuing effort to work toward harmonisation of heavy haulage regulations for its 116 Canadian members.

The Ontario Ministry of Transportation continues to consult with the SC&RA as it moves forward with consideration of a fully automated permitting process and the complete replacement of police escorts with private certified escorts.

The Certified Superload Escort Program came into effect on July 1, 2018, as HLPFI reported here. As part of the new programme, all superload permit moves in Ontario, which previously required provincial police escorts, now require newly certified private pilot escorts.

In addition, according to the SC&RA, counties throughout Ontario are considering automated permitting processes.

In Quebec, meanwhile, the Ministry of Transportation has committed to the full implementation of an automated permitting system within approximately one year, says the association.
