December 21 - ALE has lifted the second section of a telescopic tower, weighing 260 tonnes, for a self-installing telescopic offshore wind turbine in Gran Canaria.

ALE is part of the consortium building the 5 MW wind turbine, which is part of the Horizon 2020 project, in the Canary Islands. The heavy lift and transport engineering specialists says the wind turbine is the first of its kind.

ALE has performed the lifting operations for the tower and the TIM platform, as well as the final offshore installation and ballasting operations.

Planning for the project began in January 2016, and the test lifts for the tower section were completed in November 2017.

The blades and nacelle, weighing 600 tonnes and 975 tonnes respectively, will be lifted and installed at low height using strand jacks in Spring 2018.

The windmill will then be transported using tugs to its final position in the sea, where the two tower sections will be lifted and connected to the electrical cable. Once completed, ALE says the wind turbine will be the first of its kind. Energy production is expected to start by the end of 2018.
