September 9 - Hallin Marine Subsea International Ltd has successfully completed the installation of the world's largest rotor diameter subsea tidal turbine, the AK-1000.

The one megawatt subsea tidal power turbine was installed by the Skandi Skolten, a specialised installation vessel owned by DOF Subsea, at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in the Orkney Islands, Scotland.

Hallin was contracted by Atlantis Resources Corporation (ARC) to undertake the installation in the North Sea.

The AK-1000 turbine and supporting structure weighs 1,300 tonnes, the twin rotor turbine has a rotor diameter of 18m, each blade being 7.8m in length, with a cone diameter of 2.4m. Overall the full structure is in excess of 25m high and was installed in depths of 35m.

The tidal regime and vessel selection were the critical factors for the planning with a need to optimise the time available during slack water periods for the installation.
