February 10 - Port Manatee is handling the import of several heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) and other oversize units for the expansion of Tampa Electric's Polk Power Station in Polk County, Florida.

The HRSGs, which are manufactured in South Korea and imported by Babcock Power subsidiary Vogt Power International, have been arriving at the port since October 2014 onboard BBC Chartering vessels.

The units, some of which weigh as much as 255 tonnes each, are being offloaded by Federal Marine Terminals' stevedores and loaded onto specialised 18-axle trailers belonging to Beyel Brothers Crane & Rigging, before being trucked over 80 km to the power plant site.

The generators are being used by Tampa Electric in the USD700 million expansion project of its Polk Power Station, which is scheduled for completion by early 2017 and will capture waste heat from existing natural gas combustion turbines in order to create more power.

Additional shipments handled by Port Manatee for this project include the Alstom-manufactured steam turbine, which will be discharged using the ship's gear as well as the port's mobile harbour cranes.

"Special projects of this type highlight the superb capabilities of Port Manatee and its partners to handle oversized cargoes, including those headed for Polk County and other surrounding areas," said Port Manatee's executive director, Carlos Buqueras.
