Express discharge at the port of Tyne

Höegh Autoliners has transported five Hitachi TransPennine Express train carriages from Kobe, Japan to the port of Tyne in the UK. 

The new generation of TransPennine Express carriages arrived at the port on board the ro-ro vessel Höegh Antwerp.

The units weighed 50.4 tonnes each and will be stored at the port’s secure Tyne Dock estate before moving on to Hitachi Rail Europe’s facility in Newton Aycliffe, UK.

According to Adam Smallridge, quality manager at the port of Tyne’s NSA car terminal: “The train carriages were double the weight of those we usually handle due to being fully-finished.”

The railcars will be deployed to connect major cities in the North of England and Scotland.

Alongside the five train carriages, 16 Kobelco excavators, weighing up to 26 tonnes each; 12 Komatsu excavators, weighing up to 35 tonnes each; and three Hitachi excavators, weighing 8 tonnes each, were offloaded at the port.
