July 31 - Tuscor Lloyds had to charter a heavy lift ship to transport a crane designed for an jack-up rig from Xaimen, China, to Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
The heaviest component weighed 126 tonnes and had dimensions of more than 23.0 m in length, 6.7 m in width and more than 7.0 m in height.
The crane, which was required urgently, was loaded at the start of the typhoon season, and incoming Typhoon Tamil closed the Chinese port shortly before the ship was scheduled to dock, said Nick Rodriguez, Tuscor Lloyds' head of international sales.
"The client had opted for a fast dedicated charter and any time lost either to weather or port hold-ups is going to give them a major headache. Naturally the client becomes worried. However there is little we can do to influence the weather."
Two members of Tuscor Lloyds' project team flew to China to make preparations before the vessel arrived. They met with the cargo manufacturer, port authorities, stevedores, vessel owners and marine surveyors to coordinate the transport.
"Our ship was the first to berth and start working as soon as the port reopened," Rodriguez added. The cargo was loaded and secured in just under 24 hours, before the ship sailed.
