HLPFI reviews the shortlisted entries for the 2024 Port / Terminal Operator of the Year award, sponsored by UTC Overseas.
This award will be presented to the port authority or terminal operator that has demonstrated its commitment to handling heavy lift cargoes over the last 12 months.
Our 2024 shortlist includes:
Logistec Stevedoring
Logistec Stevedoring operates over 90 terminals and 60 ports, specialising in handling wind, breakbulk, steel, project, and heavy lift cargoes. The company boasts a strong safety record, with 2023 total recordable incident rate (TRIR) and lost time incident rate (LTIR) significantly below industry averages. Investments in facilities – such as the Manchester Terminal – and advanced equipment highlight Logistec’s commitment to efficiency and safety. In 2023, Manchester Terminal handled record cargo volumes without any lost time injuries.
PD Ports
PD Ports has been at the forefront of efforts to revive bulk handling capacity on Teesside, UK. Via targeted investment – comprising two electric hydraulic Liebherr cranes, which can handle 140 tonnes – Teesport has become a leading provider of project and oversize cargo handling. Committing to safety and customer service, PD Ports prepares and executes handling plans that are bespoke to every lift, including tandem lifts and vessel to site operations.
Port of Everett
Located 25 miles (40.2 km) north of Seattle, the port of Everett is a strategic self-operating seaport that supports nearly USD30 billion worth of US exports annually, ranking as the second-highest export customs district in Washington state and the fifth on the US west coast. Despite throughput volumes ranking Everett as the third-largest container port in the state, value and tonnage numbers depict Everett as playing heaviest in the breakbulk sector, handling high-value, over-dimensional cargoes in support of the aerospace, manufacturing, military, construction, agriculture and energy industries.
Solent Stevedores
Solent Stevedores is a family-run company that has been operating since 2000, placing employees, operational safety, customer service and environmental initiatives at the heart of its operations. The port services operator handles heavy lift and project cargoes at the port of Southampton. Across all of its operations, Solent Stevedores has committed to an ongoing programme of investment and improvement to not only meet the current needs of customers but their anticipated future needs too.
TMA Logistics
Handling all types of heavy lift and project cargo, TMA Logistics offers comprehensive supply chain services including customs, warehousing, forwarding, and other value-added services. It has been building customised warehouses for clients and enhancing its terminal services for competitive supply chain solutions. As major advocates of the modal shift, TMA Logistics is one of the leading barge transporters in northern Netherlands and recently launched its own container train to improve connectivity with Rotterdam’s deepsea terminals.
Zuidnatie
Zuidnatie’s entry focuses on safety as it main priority, alongside the investments it has been making in the heavy lift cargo handling sector, including the new Zuidnatie Slitting Centre (ZSC), a unique steel service centre where coils of up to 32 tonnes can be slit. Zuidnatie has also been working on minimising waiting times and the digitalisation of operations for a more seamless, paperless information flow in the supply chain.
