The PIONEERS project – an international consortium of 46 partners led by the port of Antwerp in Belgium – is to receive a EUR25 million (USD30.4million) grant from the European Union’s Horizon funding programme.

The Portable Innovation Open Network for Efficiency and Emission Reduction Solutions (PIONEERS) represents leading ports, terminal and transport operators, forwarders, knowledge institutes, technology developers, and innovator and public entities. Together they aim to rethink aspects of port operations ranging from terminal operations, concession agreements, mobile connectivity, fuels, storage and the use of energy.

The consortium will showcase 19 ambitious demonstrator projects in the fields of clean energy production and supply, sustainable port design, modal shift and flows optimisation, and digital transformation.

The port of Antwerp host the majority of demonstrators. The ports of Barcelona (Spain), Constanta (Romania) and Venlo (The Netherlands) will also play an active role.
