World Bank backs Jamaica's hub dream

February 13 - The World Bank Group has endorsed Jamaica's aim to become the logistics hub for the Caribbean, Latin America and US Gulf and East Coast area by pledging to help find funding for the pioneering project.

Jamaica's logistics hub dream sees the Caribbean island as home to world class seaports, airports, special economic zones, free zones, logistics parks, logistics centres, integrated intermodal transport capabilities, supporting infrastructure, telecommunications and trade facilitation mechanisms.
Speaking in Kingston, Jamaica recently, Giorgio Valentini, World Bank Group representative to Jamaica, described the logistics hub initiative as "transformational" adding that it will "significantly enhance Jamaica's potential for growth".
Jamaica's proposal is aimed at positioning the country alongside Rotterdam, Singapore and Dubai in the world of global freight transportation to make the most of the significant economic opportunities expected to emerge from the expansion and development of the Panama Canal.
