Sarens steels the show for UtARK

June 15 - Sarens has transported steel sections for the Utrecht-Amsterdam-Rhine Canal (UtARK) railway bridge project, in the Netherlands.

The project involves the construction of a bridge over the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal to accommodate a railroad track expansion, which will develop four tracks between Utrecht Centraal Station and the Leidsche Rijn station.

Sarens was contracted by HSM Steel Structures, part of the BAM-HSM consortium managing the project, to transport the fabricated bridge parts from the construction yard to the assembly site. Sarens is also responsible for lifting the sections for the bridge installation.

To complete the first part of the project, Sarens performed the load out of the centrepiece arch from the HSM construction yard in Schiedam and the centrepiece deck from the Hollandia construction yard in Krimpen aan den IJsell.

For the transport along the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, the barge needed to be ballasted at its maximum and then de-ballasted for unloading in Utrecht, turning the bridge parts 90 degrees during the loud out.

To transport the 520-tonne load, which measured 57 m x 13.6 m x 6.4 m, Sarens utilised self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT), two 700-tonne capacity mobile cranes, eight strand jacks and a custom-built lifting gantry.

When completed, the new bridge will measure 172 m long and 11 m wide, with steel sections weighing a total of 3,000 tonnes.
