DFDS orders ro-ro duo

June 16 - DFDS has ordered two 6,700-lane metre ro-ro ships that will be built at Sinotrans and CSC's Jinling shipyard in China.

The order for the two ro-ro vessels, which will include space for 450 trailers, is in addition to a contract signed last year with the Chinese shipyard Jingling for the construction of two ro-ro vessels.

The four newbuild vessels will service freight customers across the North Sea from 2019 and 2020.

"The ships form part of our newbuilding programme that underpins our ability to deliver the transport capacity required by our customers," says Niels Smedegaard, ceo.

The ships are the first DFDS-owned vessels built according to the new International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) regulations, which set significantly lower limits for energy consumption and emissions in relation to the ship's capacity and engine power.

The first two of the new ro-ro ships are expected to be delivered in early 2019, while the final two vessels are expected to be delivered in early 2020.

In addition to the four Jinling ships DFDS has placed an order with Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft for two further ro-ro ships, as HLPFI reported here.
