Construction is underway at the port of Raahe’s Syvälaituri 3 – deep pier 3 – in Finland, which will be primarily used to handle project cargo at the port.

Construction underway at port of Raahe’s project cargo quay

The project began with the casting of massive pier elements, which was carried out in both nearby Lapaluoto and next to the ro-ro ramp in the port of Raahe’s deep harbour – the latter of which being where the elements will eventually be moved from to the installation site.

Engineers have been using slip casting technology to cast the concrete. It is based on the use of a hydraulically moveable moul, whereby the concrete is cast in layers. The formwork is lifted evenly as the concrete sets and is filled with fresh concrete as the casting progresses.

Installation of the pier elements is due to begin during July. Meanwhile, dredging work has also been carried out in the port area by Finnish-headquartered construction firm YIT using its Merikuokka dredger, with water construction work set for completion by the end of September 2025.
