March 4 - DP World's London Gateway - the UK's newest deep-sea container port - has seen giant cranes arrive at the port after a two-month voyage from China.

Three new cranes, each weighing 2,000 tonnes and measuring 138 m at full height, are the first of their kind in the United Kingdom and are capable of lifting four containers at once, according to DP World.

"A world-class deep-sea container port requires a world-class set of cranes. They will be the lynchpin of the operation - the biggest, most modern and most efficient the UK has ever seen," explained Simon Moore, ceo, DP World London Gateway.

The cranes were built and delivered by China's Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company (ZPMC). This first delivery of giant lifters left Shanghai on January 7. Two more cranes embarked from the Chinese gateway at the end of February. The cranes will operate on a new 2.7 km quay wall at the London terminal.

DP World added that a further 19 cranes are expected to be delivered over the coming years.
