ABS eyes Singapore growth

April 11 - Maritime classification service provider the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) is set to make a significant investment in Singapore.

In a move to strengthen its engineering and surveying capabilities in Singapore, ABS is expanding its workforce, increasing its research and development efforts, and establishing a Global Performance Centre in the country.

Recognising the growing role that Singapore is playing in the marine and offshore industries, ABS president and ceo, Christopher J Wiernicki, commented: "We are moving in step with Singapore as it continues to expand its presence in global trade. These investments represent a continuation of our long-term commitment to Singapore, elevating its significance as an integral part of ABS' future."

ABS will create a Singapore Innovation and Research Centre (SIRC), that will "target innovative solutions that can be put to work across the marine and offshore industries", according to Wiernicki.

At the same time, the ABS Global Performance Centre will focus on improving operational performance and energy efficiency, assisting its clients in solving operational challenges that offshore assets face.

SIRC will also be involved with the ABS-MPA Maritime Professorship Programme at Singapore University of Technology and Design - promoting marine and offshore research and education in the country.

To support these investments, ABS has made a number of managerial appointments. Dr. Gu Hai has been named director of the SIRC. Ah Kuan Seah has been appointed director of the Global Performance Centre. Head of energy efficiency and environmental performance at the Global Performance Centre will be Franck Violette with George Wang serving as head of vessel performance.
