Aiming for deeper engagement with Pacific countries, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has opened a regional presence office (RPO) in Suva, Fiji.
The RPO intends to support Pacific nations by advancing their maritime sectors while also implementing global regulations and standards in maritime safety and environmental protection.
“This RPO will serve as a centre of coordination, knowledge and technical expertise, directly supporting countries and ensuring that the Pacific is part of the shipping evolution,” said IMO secretary-general Arsenio Dominguez. “Pacific SIDS [small island developing states] and least developed countries (LDCs), have always been a priority for IMO.”
Already active partners in several IMO projects and programmes, such as those that support ocean protection and the reduction of harmful emissions from ships, the RPO will deepen this engagement. Dominguez has encouraged Pacific nations to continue engaging with the IMO to ensure the implementation of the IMO net-zero framework.
There are 14 IMO member states in the Pacific Islands region, including 12 SIDS, along with Australia and New Zealand.
Last month, the IMO called for calm after renewed attacks in the Red Sea.
