DB Cargo has secured a contract with steel production company ArcelorMittal to deliver raw materials for its blast furnace at its facility in Eisenhüttenstadt, Germany.

The contract, which runs until 2031, will see DB Cargo transport up to 4.2 million tonnes of raw materials a year to the site.

By summer 2021, DB Cargo will purchase 352 multi-functional double wagons and 1,408 special containers to transport ore, coke, and limestone.

DB Cargo’s logistics partner Innofreight designed the wagons and optimised their loading volume specifically for such raw materials, according to DB Cargo. Innofreight will also build and operate semi-automated loading and unloading facilities at the Eisenhüttenstadt plant.

“Our new wagons for ArcelorMittal will have an especially durable under frame, while the removable superstructure is designed to be flexible so that it can be replaced more frequently,” said Pierre Timmermans, management board member responsible for sales at DB Cargo.
