US ports secure funding

The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has awarded ports across the USA with funding for improvement projects.

As part of the USACE 2018 investment plan, Texas’ Port Corpus Christi secured nearly USD23 million for its channel improvement project, designed to deepen and widen one of the nation's busiest waterways.

Earlier this year, the port secured USD13 million in funding for the channel improvement project. The additional USD23 million, according to the port, fully funds the second of six contracts and extends the project construction from the entrance in the Gulf of Mexico to Redfish Bay.

Anticipated completion of the entire
channel improvement project is projected for 2021-2022.

Meanwhile, the USACE awarded the South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) with USD49
million to increase the water depth at Charleston Harbor, which will deepen the harbour to 52 ft (15.8 m).

The USACE funding, in combination with a USD50 million loan from the state, will enable the Charleston Harbor to be deepened
as far as the Wando Welch Terminal by early 2021.

The port of Jacksonville (Jaxport) was also awarded funding for its harbour deepening project, securing approximately USD32.4 million.

Jaxport ceo, Eric Green, said: “These dollars signal that the federal government believes in our deepening project and has confidence in our ability to provide a return on this investment.”
