Antwerp Shipping and Forwarding (ASF) has successfully managed the shipment of 2,475 steel pipes from Caofeidian, China, to Thorlakshofn, Iceland, for a power plant project.

Each steel pipe measured 12 m in length with differing diameters. With a combined weight of 2,474 tonnes, the shipment’s declared cargo volume was initially 2,849.3 cu m, yet this figure turned out to be 3,169.7 cu m.

The pipes were originally loaded as breakbulk at the port of Caofeidian aboard the COSCO motor vessel Chang Shun 2 and discharged at Antwerp, Belgium. From here, it was reloaded onto the motor vessel NM Copenhagen for final delivery to Thorlakshofn.

ASF was able to reduce overall transport costs by 25 percent thanks to using Antwerp as a transshipment hub as opposed to shipping directly to Iceland.

ASF – a member of the Mega Move Alliance (MMA) – was responsible for receiving and temporarily storing the breakbulk at Antwerp; sorting the pipes by diameter; conducting discharge and loading surveys; reloading, lashing, and securing the cargo onboard; and managing customs clearance as bonded cargo in transit.
