SAL Heavy Lift’s heavy lift vessel, Lone, is supporting the Baltic Power offshore wind project, deploying a newly designed and fabricated installation and lifting tool to handle the wind farm’s transition pieces.
The vessel was mobilised in Eemshaven, the Netherlands, before setting sail for Rønne, Denmark to begin installing transition pieces – marking the vessel’s debut in transition piece installation.
Aboard the vessel, SAL Heavy Lift incorporated a transition piece lifting tool, which has a working load limit of up to 640 tonnes. Custom grillages, designed in-house, are octagonal steel frames designed to fit Baltic Power transition pieces on deck, and are easily adjustable to different transition piece diameters. These grillages have a quick-clamp solution as part of their design, allowing hydraulic cylinders to be sea-fastened in minutes.
Both cranes aboard the vessel are fitted with two 20-tonne tugger arms, optimised for the installation of transition pieces.
The transport and installation engineering was a joint effort between Van Oord and SAL Heavy Lift.
Earlier this year, UTC Overseas transported oversized electrical equipment for the construction of an onshore transformer station at the Baltic Power offshore wind farm.
