UK-based Robert Wynn & Sons has delivered a 155-tonne transformer from Rotterdam to the National Grid’s Uskmouth substation in Newport, UK.
Robert Wynn deployed its heavy lift ro-ro barge Terra Marique for the shipment, working on behalf of Antwerp Metal Logistics (AML) for the project.
It began by transporting the transformer from Rhenus Logistics’ deepsea terminal in Rotterdam, before calling at Associated British Ports’ (ABP) Newport north dock to load and position an eight-axle SPMT from Allelys, to be used for offloading at the substation.
With a limited tidal wave at Uskmouth, this extra step meant that the transformer was ready for immediate discharge. After laying by overnight, the vessel departed the lock, crossed the River Usk and completed the roll-off in under 20 minutes — just 300 m from the final destination.
The project was made more significant given that Newport is Terra Marique’s registered port, and where Robert Wynn began more than 160 years ago.
