Multipurpose shipping line AAL has outlined its strategy to comply with the upcoming Sulphur 2020 regulation.

The Singapore-headquartered shipping company will make the switch to low sulphur fuel, which comprises variants such as low sulphur fuel oil (LSFO), ultra low sulphur fuel oil (ULSFO) and low sulphur marine gasoil (LS-MGO), all currently more expensive than standard marine fuel.

From September 1, 2019, AAL will implement various calculation methodologies “to fairly share the increased cost of low sulphur fuel usage with our customers”.

This will coincide with “the arduous task” of preparing its fleet for low sulphur fuel, with the aim of being fully compliant with the regulation by the end of the year.
