Construction has gotten underway in Ventspils, Latvia to adapt three intersections for the transportation of oversized cargo. The works are costing approximately EUR100,000 (USD116,860) and are being funded by UAB Fulmenn.

This work will allow Ventspils to serve as a unique logistics corridor in the Baltic region, capable of accommodating road convoys up to 100 m in length. The development of the logistics corridor involves the Freeport of Ventspils Authority, Ventspils Municipality, Stena Line Ports Ventspils, Ventspils Communal Administration, plus contractors SIA Marpet and Ventspils labiekārtošanas kombināts.

“With this project, Ventspils is taking a significant step forward in strengthening its position as a key player in the development of both offshore and onshore renewable energy parks in the Baltic States,” said Igors Udodovs, acting ceo of the Freeport of Ventspils. “Leveraging Ventspils’ natural and infrastructural advantages is vital not only for enhancing Latvia’s energy independence but also for boosting the national economy.”

Both direct economic benefits to the port as well as boosting the municipal budget are expected as a result of the upgrades in Ventspils.

Last month, the first vessel carrying wind turbine blades destined for the Laflora Energy Park in Jelgava Municipality arrived at the port of Ventspils. At 87-m-long, the blades are the largest ever handled at any European port. 30 similar vessels are due to call at the port over the course of the year.
