MOVe Oceans, the shipping division of freight and logistics specialist MOVe Logistics Group, has launched a monthly breakbulk trans-Tasman service linking Northport in the Northland region of New Zealand, with Brisbane and Port Alma in Queensland, as well as Tasmania’s Bell Bay.
Northport is the sole North Island port on the route, with subsequent calls at Nelson, Dunedin and Bluff. Equipped to carry a mix of breakbulk, oversized project cargo, flatracks and containers, the route is serviced by the general cargo vessel Brio Faith. The vessel has capacity for 630 containers and is equipped with its own cranes.
Operating its trans-Tasman route since 2022, MOVe Oceans noted that the introduction of this service underscored the growing significance of New Zealand’s Northland region in Australian trade. The company cited this as welcome news for Northland exporters in sectors such as manufacturing and forestry.
Anthony Browne, general manager, oceans at MOVe Logistics Group, said the service was already well-subscribed with bagged and overdimensional breakbulk cargo, along with project cargoes. “We are one of the few providers to provide a specialist over-dimension cargo offer, from large machinery to structural steel, cranes, wind farm blades and more,” he said.
“With a strong foundation of trusted customers and a stable, well-established service, we’re excited to help unlock new possibilities for importers and exporters in the upper North Island.”
David Finchett, Northport’s commercial manager, commented: “It provides a direct shipping corridor between the Upper North Island and key regional ports in Australia, as well as making the South Island more accessible for Northland businesses.”
Northport, located on Marsden Point, is New Zealand’s newest and northernmost multipurpose port, with deepwater berths, extensive laydown areas, and over 180 ha of land available for expansion.
