The USA’s Military Sealift Command has chartered US Ocean’s multipurpose vessel Ocean Giant to transport cargo to the McMurdo Station research facility in Antarctica.

The operation is part of Military Sealift Command’s annual resupply mission in support of Operation Deep Freeze – a Joint Task Force Support for Antarctica mission to resupply the remote scientific outpost.

The shipment included 443 pieces of cargo, consisting mechanical parts, construction materials, office supplies, electronics equipment, and vehicles.

According to the US Transportation Command, these supplies will provide nearly 80 percent of the items needed for survival over the severe arctic winter when the station is cut off from the rest of the world.
