April 22 - In the first quarter of 2014, OJSC Sea Port of Saint Petersburg (SPSPb) handled 1.9 million tonnes of cargo, up 5 percent year-on-year over the same period of 2013.

General cargo volume increased by 5 percent to 1.5 million tonnes, with volumes of ferrous metals increasing by 16 percent up to 0.553 million tonnes. However the amount of non-ferrous metals handled at the gateway decreased by 29 percent to 0.326 million tonnes.

Volumes of loose and bulk cargoes rose by 3 percent to 0.436 million tonnes, mainly due to the handling of mineral fertilisers, which increased in volume by 20 percent to 0.256 million tonnes.

The export turnover of SPSPb increased by 17 percent and amounted to 1.6 million tonnes, but import volumes decreased by 34 percent to 0.289 million tonnes.
