Fracht develops new heavy-duty railcar

August 15 - Houston headquartered rail logistics specialist Fracht USA has designed and build a new railcar for use in the North American market.

In cooperation with railroad engineering firm Kasgro Inc, based in New Castle, Pennsylvania, Fracht USA has unveiled two 16-axle heavy-duty railcars.
The railcars have been designed to carry a range of heavy, over-dimensional and out-of-gauge cargoes weighing as much as 399.6 tonnes.
Each car is constructed with T1 steel, which is lighter and stronger then the steel found in conventional railcars; at 150.6 tonnes empty it is the lightest 16-axle railcar on the market today, says Fracht USA. This allows for heavier loads to be cleared on railroads across the North American network.
Each railcar has a load deck of 36 ft and features an increased distance between truck centres, which improves weight distribution. Furthermore, each car has a low profile and high camber, which allows for taller loads to be transported on the railway network.
The Fracht USA railcars are open for public use though a marketing agreement with Kasgro.
Fracht USA is taking a more active approach towards transport engineering, especially as the complexity of rail transport projects has increased. To meet these demands the company has appointed Eric Thompson to the newly created position of vice president transportation engineer, within the rail and heavy haul department at Fracht USA.
Thompson is a 15-year veteran of railcar engineering and transport logistics. He brings with him a range of skills from designing railcars, graphic engineering and drafting, to being a qualified inspector of railcar tie-down securing.
