Milwaukee sees record year for steel

December 16 - Workers at the Port of Milwaukee are busy unloading the final shipment of steel for 2014, culminating in one of the gateway's busiest seasons for steel in recent decades.

The steel now being unloaded from the Federal Mattawa brings 2014's steel volume to 179,000-tonnes, the second highest annual tonnage since 1970 and highest since 2006.

The port noted that an increase in steel moving through Milwaukee is a positive indicator of manufacturing activity. "Among the other factors affecting steel volumes at the Port of Milwaukee are global economic conditions, reliability and efficiency of delivering steel through the St. Lawrence Seaway, and cost-effective port operations in Milwaukee," said acting port director Paul Vornholt

With the St. Lawrence Seaway closing for the season later this month, Federal Mattawa is the final vessel to bring overseas cargo into the Port of Milwaukee.
