Choppers on the Horizon

Horizon Terminal Services has handled the movement of two helicopters through Jaxport's heavy lift and oversize cargo berth at Blount Island Marine Terminal.

The aircraft were part of a group of helicopters that first moved from the Middle East through Jaxport in 2015 from the Middle East en route to a modification facility in Alabama.

Measuring 50 ft (15.2 m) long and weighing 7,000 lbs (3.1 tonnes) each, they were flown into the Florida port and landed onto Horizon Terminal Services' outdoor storage facility at Blount Island.

Horizon's stevedores loaded the aircraft onto wheeled platforms before rolling them onto the Höegh Autoliners ro-ro vessel Höegh Transporter for their return trip to the Middle East for use by a US government ally in the region.

New Jersey-based freight forwarder and Customs broker Serra International planned and oversaw the logistics operation. According to James Zino, global project director at Serra International, this is the first shipment of 12 helicopters that will be transported. The next shipment is scheduled for early May 2018.

A video of the project can be seen here.
