February 27 - 2011 saw a welcome increase in seaborne cargo throughput at the port of Hamburg, totalling 132.2 million tons that represents an increase of 9.1 percent over 2010. Container throughput in 2011 totalled 9 million teu, or 1.12 million teu more

Claudia Roller, ceo of Port of Hamburg Marketing (HHM), said: "We are delighted that in 2011 the Port of Hamburg proved able to achieve above-average growth both in totalthroughput and in container traffic." Whilst the port's marketing team says Hamburg can look back on thoroughly satisfactory results for the year on both imports and exports, statistics on conventional cargoes, which also cover ro-ro cargoes, were down at 2.5 million tons (minus 3.8 percent) in 2011 with the export of heavy cargoes, plant and machinery weighing in at 543,000 tons (minus 8 percent).
