April 16 - South African heavy lifting and specialised transport provider Vanguard has coordinated the relocation of a large hydraulic press plant from a factory near Johannesburg to its new facility in southwest Ireland.

The plant consisted of containerised and breakbulk cargoes, which were removed from the South African plant, before being packed and transported by Vanguard.

Vanguard explained that the most challenging part of the move was the relocation of the press frames, each of which weighed 120 tonnes. These units proved extremely difficult to handle, said the company, since they had to be removed from pits measuring 3 m deep and then turned on their sides for loading.

Space constraints required a self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) to be used for the removal of the frames from the factory.

Vanguard also designed and fabricated a bespoke shipping frame to facilitate the safe and efficient transport of the press from South Africa to Ireland.
