November 24 - The lengthening programme of Finnlines' vessels is in full swing in the Remontowa shipyard in Gdansk, Poland, with the first of four of its vessels extended by approximately 30 m.
Finnlines' ro-ro vessel Finntide, delivered in 2012 from the Chinese Jinling shipyard, arrived in Gdansk in September 2017. As planned, the vessel was cut in two and a 30 m section was inserted between the parts.
The sections were then welded together again, and around 1,000 additional lane metres were added to the vessel's capacity.
Finnlines claims the close to 30 percent capacity increase will considerably reduce the energy consumption per transported unit compared to the original vessel. After the modification, Finntide is 217.77 m long and has a capacity of 4,213 lane metres.
Finnlines' EUR70 million (USD83 million) energy efficiency and emission reduction investment programme, which was launched this year, will lengthen four of its Breeze series ro-ro vessels. Finnlines has also signed an option with Remontowa shipyard for the extension of two further vessels.
The whole lengthening programme will be completed by May 2018, says Finnlines.
