The UK government has approved the long-anticipated final investment decision (FID) for the Sizewell C nuclear power plant project, giving the green light for the GBP38 billion (USD51.5 billion) capital project.

Sizewell C received the final go-ahead to build the power station on July 22.

Sizewell C forms a key part of the UK’s plans to build a fleet of large and small nuclear plants across the country.

The project, which will be delivered using a fleet model based on Hinkley Point C, is expected to benefit from lessons learned at its sister site, where construction of elements of the second unit has been running 50 percent faster than the first.

Hinkley Point C’s ‘build and repeat’ approach is delivering significant efficiency gains; prefabrication in factories on and off-site is improving productivity, with giant steel structures and complete rooms now being lifted in.

Last week, Sarens’ heavy lift ring crane Big Carl lifted the 245-tonne dome onto Hinkley Point C’s second reactor building. The 14 m-tall dome closes the 44 m-high building, allowing its fit-out to accelerate.

You can watch a video of the lift here:
