Celebrating decades of trusted partnership with Doel nuclear power plant.
Sarens was recognised in April 2025 with the prestigious KCD Contractor Award in the Maintenance and Overhaul category by the Doel nuclear power plant in Belgium. This honour highlights Sarens’ unwavering commitment to operational excellence, technical precision, and long-standing support to the Belgian energy sector.
The KCD Contractor Awards (Kerncentrale Doel Contractor Awards) are presented annually by the Doel nuclear facility to contractors and partner companies that have demonstrated outstanding performance in areas such as occupational safety, technical innovation, collaboration, and quality in project execution. Sarens’ recognition underscores its role as a trusted partner in maintaining one of Belgium’s primary energy sources.
Sarens has been involved with the Doel nuclear power plant since its earliest phases in the 1960s, as well as with the Tihange power plant since the 1970s. Together, these two facilities provide nearly half of Belgium’s electricity. Over the decades, Sarens has delivered a range of critical services, from the installation of essential components to long-term maintenance and technology upgrades.
Our nuclear expertise dates back to 1969, when we developed specialised heavy lifting devices to place Generation II Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) components at its home base in Belgium. Today, Sarens continues to support clients with advanced engineering solutions and tailor-made equipment designed to operate in confined, high-sensitivity environments.
“We firmly support a well-diversified green energy mix for the world’s future energy demands,” said Sarens CEO Wim Sarens. “Our dedicated nuclear team draws upon many years of experience to deliver safe, efficient, and innovative solutions to the energy sector.”
Sarens’ track record in nuclear energy spans the European continent, including key roles in projects such as the construction of the EPR reactor at Flamanville in France and the ongoing development of Hinkley Point C in the United Kingdom. At Hinkley, Sarens has deployed the SGC-250—affectionately known as “Big Carl”—one of the largest land-based cranes in the world, to lift major prefabricated components for the facility’s reactor and turbine structures.
With this latest recognition from the Doel nuclear power plant, we reaffirm our position as a leader in nuclear logistics, heavy lifting, and engineered transport, supporting safe, reliable energy production for the future.
