The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) technical cooperation committee has approved the establishment of an IMO regional presence office (RPO) for the Pacific Islands region.

The approval was made during a meeting held September 20-24 (TC 71) and is subject to final approval at the 34th extraordinary session of the council on November 8-12.

The existing RPOs are: Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire and Accra in Ghana for West and Central Africa; Nairobi, Kenya for East and Southern Africa; Manila, the Philippines for East Asia; and port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago for the Caribbean.

The final decision about the location of the Pacific regional presence office will be made once potential host countries have submitted their proposals to the IMO secretary general.
