Mammoet is partnering with German technology company Keyou to explore potential designs of emission-free engines for SPMTs.

Based in Munich, Keyou develops hydrogen-adapted components for combustion engines; the partnership with Mammoet was signed during the PortXL shakedown event.

Elsewhere, Canada's Bellemare Group has added 40 axle lines of SPMTs and converted its entire fleet to bio-oils for fuels and hydraulics.

Speaking with HLPFI in the May/June 2019 edition of the magazine, Kevin Kwateng, director of heavy haul operations, said: “The bigger firms have not wanted to [convert], because they could easily convert their whole fleet, and do not want to mix and risk contamination.”
