Specifically designed for breakbulk and project cargo, the WAX service utilises Swire Projects’ multipurpose heavy lift vessels, including I-type vessels (19,638 dwt) that feature two 240-tonne capacity cranes that can be used in tandem to lift 480 tonnes, and E/F-type vessels (12,744 dwt) that offer a maximum lifting capacity of up to 300 tonnes.

Namir Khanbabi, general manager of Swire Projects, said: “The WAX service stemmed from our recognition of the need for a dependable breakbulk and project cargo shipping service connecting Asia to the Pilbara region and the wider Western Australia.”

Swire Projects’ parent company Swire Shipping, meanwhile, has upgraded its North West Australia Direct (NWD) service to increase calls into Port Hedland to every 10 days. The two services – WAX and NWD – will operate in tandem to provide increased frequency and greater port coverage in the region.

Recently, Swire Projects transported wind turbine components for the Kathleen Valley lithium project in Western Australia.

The shipment, which included blades measuring approximately 81 m in length, was transported from the port of Taicang, China, to Geraldton, Australia on the Swire Projects’ H-class vessel, Pacific Hero.
