Rope and Sling Specialists (RSS) provided equipment and personnel to help install a 50-tonne vessel at manufacturing plant in Scotland this month.
RSS supplied shackles, 20-tonne capacity slings and hydraulic skates addressed to upend and install the vessel. The client was a specialist manufacturer of military, nuclear and oil and gas equipment.
Davey Walker, business development director (Scotland) at RSS, explained: “The onsite [50-tonne capacity electric overhead travelling] crane couldn’t get to the final installation point due to restrictions on travel. We had to get as far as the crane would allow and then lower the vessel onto skates, before pushing and pulling to get over the fittings the client had already set into concrete. Once over the fixings the vessel was jacked up, the skates were removed and the vessel was lowered onto wooden pads to allow for jack removal.”
The RSS team arrived onsite at 08:00 in preparation for work to commence but delivery of the vessel was delayed until 20:00. The installation team remained in place despite the delay and unloaded the unit be means of two horizontal and two vertical permanent lifting points. The unit was secured in place by 23:00.
Walker added that RSS’ customer base is growing, with new clients in North America, Kazakhstan and Trinidad coming to the fore. “Overall, this year was very exciting with some healthy orders giving us much encouragement as we address 2020’s early opportunities,” he said.
