Three Modulift-designed and manufactured spreader beams have been used by UK-based Allelys to lift a 176-tonne steam turbine generator.

The generator was first delivered to the port of Sutton Bridge from Peterborough using a specialist 16-axle trailer. Once at the port, it needed to be loaded onto a vessel bound for Singapore.

Shahid Islam, project manager at Allelys, explained: “Modulift spreader beams were used in a one-over-two configuration to lift the steam turbine generator safely from port to vessel with a LG1550 mobile crane. The generator measured 14 m long, 4.8 m wide and 4.5 m high, so specialised transportation and lifting equipment was a must.”

The configuration included a MOD 250 spreader beam at the top, measuring 5 m, with MOD 110 and 110H beams underneath

Sarah Spivey, managing director at Modulift, added: “The MOD spreader beams are lightweight, easily assembled and can be re-used for different lifts… Combining them into a 1-over-2 configuration allows for multiple lifting points using just one crane.”
