Blades arrive at Longview

The port of Longview has once again handled wind turbine blades for Oregon’s Leaning Juniper wind farm.

In 2006, the port handled the original cargo for the wind farm and, last month, upgraded blades arrived at the port in batches of 48. They were transported via Union Pacific Railway from Quebec, Canada.

Stevedores from the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) discharged the blades from the railcars and provided fixture swapping services before loading the 44 mm blades onto trucks.

Canada-based heavy haulier Totran Transportation Services handled the final delivery of the components to the wind farm, which is located near Arlington.

“This type of operation is well suited for the port of Longview,” said director of marine terminals Mark Price. “Our direct connections to both mainline rail and interstate, combined with specialised cargo handling equipment and abundant laydown space, gives the port a strategic advantage for handling these over-dimensional and project cargo type operations.”
